I recently read an article titled, “This Column Will Change Your Life.” Talk about a great attention-grabbing headline! The following line was, “Stop being busy.”

Of course, I was hooked! And I began asking myself, ‘What’s the secret?’

The article went on to explain that there are only three viable time management steps you need to worry about:

  1. Identify what seem to be, right now, the most meaningful ways to spend your life.
  2. Schedule time for those things.
  3. There is no step three.

So, what if we actually scheduled those important, meaningful things first, then fit in the rest of it and left out anything that didn’t fit?

You might be thinking, awesome! I get to spend all of my time on meaningful, fun stuff. Not exactly. There are many meaningful things that may not be fun, but they are meaningful – adulting, work responsibilities, projects around the house, etc…

Also, remember that if you follow the steps above, you will cut out a lot of unimportant things, but you might cut out some important things as well. Keep that in mind.

I encourage you to write down the important, meaningful things you want to spend the next {enter time frame} doing. Then pick one thing from that list, and schedule it. It might be something like:

  • Sit down and have dinner with the family two nights a week
  • Take the kids to school in the morning a couple of times a week
  • Have a date night at least twice a month
  • Have a morning routine and do it at least three days a week

You get the picture. Take control of your life. Discover what’s important and meaningful to you, and make time for it! If you’re interested in learning more about this topic, check out Overwhelmed by Brigid Schulte.
