Are you moody? If you answered no, have your spouse, kids, parents, friends, or co-workers ever asked about your mood? Did your initial answer change?
If you feel like you’re moodier more often than not, do you just accept it because you were born that way or have always been that way?
Let’s take an alternative position: could it be that we actually create our moods?
Could it be that our habits create moods?
For example, how we sleep, eat, and exercise can significantly affect our mood. And thoughts – the ones you have and how often you have them.
Do you think about all of the things you’re grateful for in your life and all the amazing experiences you’ve had (and still await you)? Or, are you focusing on all of the things that could go wrong and missteps along the way?
If you find yourself in a “moody trap,” why not try to change a few habits? For example, instead of watching four hours of TV a night, watch two and spend the extra time doing something that will bring you joy – taking a nice walk (or run), trying out a new dinner recipe, writing in a journal, or exploring a new hobby or place.
In the week ahead, give it a shot. I am confident that building better habits builds better moods, and I am sure you’ll see an immediate difference in how you view yourself and the world around you.
