I saw this quote on my desktop calendar from Gary John Bishop, and I loved it:
“Just because you are right doesn’t mean you have to be right about it.”
Okay, so you are right. But does proving the other person was wrong make them like you more, especially when they didn’t ask for your opinion? Trust me. The answer is no. I am speaking from experience.
There was a time when I thought I enjoyed debating and arguing. But I woke up one day and realized I just wanted to be right. Why?
It doesn’t make people say, “Oh wow. Jeff is a really great listener.” This quote from How to Win Friends and Influence People hits this idea home: “You can’t win an argument. You can’t because if you lose it, you lose it, and if you win it, you lose it.”
Humans desire to be right, but it might be one thing holding you back the most. I know it was for me.
